George

George will be fifty-five this year.

He is not particularly remarkable to look at anymore. Time has left its mark in all the ways time does. The fur is not quite what it once was. The stitching may show its age. The years have settled into him the same way they settle into old books, well-used tools, and favorite places. Yet George remains.

Over fifty-five years, many things have come and gone. People in my life changed. Addresses changed. Jobs changed. Technology changed. The world itself seemed to reinvent itself more than once. George remained.

He has never offered advice. He has never solved a difficult problem. He has never spoke a reassuring word during uncertain times. And yet, somehow, he has always been there.

Perhaps that is why George comes to mind whenever I think about stability. We often imagine stability as something grand. We think of strong foundations, giant trees, enduring structures, and unshakable certainty. Yet some forms of stability are quieter than that.

Sometimes stability is simply the presence of something familiar.

Something that requires nothing.

Something that asks nothing.

Something that remains.

This morning, during meditation, George found his way into my thoughts again. Not because he needed anything.

Not because there was a problem to solve. Simply because there he was, occupying his familiar place in memory.

A quiet reminder that not everything in life has to change.

In a world that rarely stands still, George has spent fifty-five years doing exactly that. Remaining.

And perhaps there is a lesson in that.

Not every source of grounding has to be profound. Not every source of comfort has to be explained. Sometimes it is enough to know that something has journeyed alongside us through the years, carrying pieces of every chapter, every season, and every version of ourselves.

George has never been just a teddy bear. He has become a witness. A witness to a life. And after fifty-five years, that feels like something worth celebrating.

I find contentment in George just sitting there being George. 🧸

George reminds me that despite all the changes life has brought, I am still connected to every version of myself that came before. George is the steady thread that runs through my entire life.

We all have our own version of George. It may be a teddy bear, a photograph, a blanket, a favorite book, or a well-worn item that has quietly traveled through life beside us.

Take a moment today to reconnect with it.

Hold it, look at it, or simply sit with it for a few minutes.

Reflect on the years it has shared with you, the memories it carries, and the chapters of your life it has witnessed.

You may discover that the object itself is not what matters most.

What matters is the reminder that, through all of life's changes, some things remain connected to every version of who we have been.

And sometimes, that connection is worth celebrating.

Wishing you calm, clarity, and much love,

Steve
