Sometimes Family Finds You

Change is a natural part of life. Sometimes change arrives through major life events. A new job. A move. A loss. A new beginning. Sometimes it arrives much more quietly. For us, it arrived in the form of a black cat.

A little over a year ago, we began noticing a black cat around our property. He would appear at a distance, watching carefully before disappearing again. Like many outdoor cats, he was cautious and uncertain around people. If we placed food outside, he would wait until we stepped away before approaching.

At first, we assumed he was simply passing through. But he kept returning. Morning and evening, almost without fail, he would show up looking for a meal from the hands that fed him. He was cautious, observant, and determined to keep his distance. Yet there was also something familiar about the routine that began to develop.

That was when I gave him a name. “Sneakers”. Because somehow he always seemed to appear when you least expected him.

Winter Worries

As autumn turned toward winter, we became increasingly concerned about how he would manage the colder months. We knew he was still a wild outdoor cat. He was not ours to keep. He lived by his own rules and followed his own path. Still, we cared. We installed an automatic feeder so food would always be available. We purchased a heated water dish to prevent freezing. We even bought a heated outdoor cat house in the hope that he might have a warm place to shelter during the harshest weather.

Then one day he disappeared. Days became weeks. Weeks became longer than we wanted to admit. We wondered where he had gone and whether he had found a safe place to spend the winter. Maybe he had discovered shelter in a nearby barn. Maybe someone else had taken him in. We simply didn't know. When spring finally arrived and Sneakers appeared again, we were relieved beyond words. The wandering black cat had returned.

The Outdoor Brother

Our home already includes three indoor cats, Tigger, Echo, and Zephyr. They enjoy spending time on the front porch and in our screened outdoor living area out back, where they can safely enjoy fresh air, sunshine, and the sights and sounds of nature. What surprised us was how quickly Sneakers became part of their world.

He began spending more and more time around our property. Eventually, it seemed as though he had chosen a permanent place of his own. The side of the porch became his preferred sleeping spot. During the day he could often be found stretched out nearby, relaxing in the sunshine or quietly observing everything happening around him.

When the indoor cats settled near the screened area, Sneakers often positioned himself outside the door as if he were stopping by to visit friends. There was never a formal introduction. No discussion. No agreement. Somehow they simply accepted each other.

Trust on a Wild Cat's Terms

Even today, Sneakers remains a wild cat. He is not afraid of us, but he is not fully domesticated either. He often approaches as if he wants affection. He will move closer and sometimes attempt to rub against us. Then suddenly his instincts take over and he startles himself, jumping back as though he has remembered he is supposed to be cautious. His sharp claws are a good reminder that he still belongs to the outdoors. Trust has been growing, but it has grown according to his timeline, not ours. And perhaps that is why the relationship feels so special. Nothing has been forced. Every step forward has been chosen.

Why Does He Talk to Me?

One of the greatest mysteries involves his voice. Sneakers talks. A lot. My partner feeds him as well. He knows both of us. Yet for reasons I cannot fully explain, he seems especially interested in having conversations with me. When I speak to him, he often answers. When he appears, he announces himself. When he settles nearby, there is usually a running commentary accompanying the visit. I always respond the same way. I tell him he is safe. I tell him he is welcome. I tell him he is a beautiful cat.

Whether he understands the words themselves or simply recognizes the tone, I cannot say. What I do know is that our conversations have become part of the daily rhythm of life.

Freedom, Choice, and Connection

Perhaps what I appreciate most about Sneakers is that he remains completely free. He is not confined. He is not owned. He comes and goes as he pleases. He could leave tomorrow and follow a different path. But day after day, he continues choosing this place. He chooses the porch. He chooses the conversations. He chooses the company of our cats. And, in his own way, he chooses us. There is something beautifully humbling about a relationship that exists entirely because both sides continue saying yes.

The Mystery of Being Chosen

People often ask what it means when a black cat chooses you. Some look to folklore. Others explore spiritual traditions. Still others search for scientific explanations.

Personally, I am comfortable allowing some mystery to remain. What matters most is not whether Sneakers represents a spiritual sign, a familiar bond, simple companionship, or something else entirely. What matters is the connection. A frightened cat appeared at our property. Over time, trust replaced fear. A visitor became a regular. A regular became family. And now, whenever I step outside and hear a familiar voice calling from the porch, I am reminded that some of life's most meaningful relationships are the ones we never planned for.

Sometimes family finds you. Sometimes family arrives on four paws. And sometimes family is a black cat named Sneakers who remains wild, free, and very much loved.

Wishing you calm, clarity, and much love,

Steve
